Emily Carr Grad Show 2008
Saturday night I attended the ever-popular Emily Carr Undergraduate Exhibition, more commonly referred to as the “grad show” among my peers. There is some stellar work there, as always, and I strongly encourage anyone interested in art, communication design, industrial design, film or animation to get down there in the coming week and see the work of this year’s group of 350+ talents.
The show runs for a shorter period this year so you only have until this coming Sunday the 11th to see it for yourself! The show is open 10 am to 6pm at Emily Carr Institute, 1399/1400 Johnston St. on Granville Island. More info »
For myself and my class, today marks one year since our graduation and grad show… how time flies! The feeling walking to the show opening on that perfect sunny evening and the energy of the night itself has a nostalgic magic.
This year I helped put out the grad site again but with a much different set of roles. The student volunteers and coordinating faculty gave a tremendous effort; many thanks and congratulations go out to them for producing a fabulous grad 2008 website!
Note that many projects showing at the school are not on the website, and vice versa. This is particularly true of design projects which were not yet complete at the time of submission. So do visit the show, pick up a printed catalogue, and check out the website. Enjoy!
Great design facilitates another climate action campaign
Via No Impact Man, thanks to my mother for the great link
Today Al Gore launched the We Can Solve It campaign, “a $300 million, 3-year campaign to educate the public about global warming and urge action from political leaders.”

Eye candy for a “total design geek”
This lunch blog is a little later than lunch hour because I keep getting distracted by articles.
While scoping out design firms I’d be interested in working for, I thought about the kind of design I want to be doing and who I want to do it for. To that end, here’s a collection of websites (I’ll probably add some more later) that speak to the kinds of visual languages — and variety of visual languages — that influence me or that I would like to pursue in my work where appropriate. It’s also the kind of high calibre design I want to see out of myself sooner rather than later. If I can find myself in a studio that designs with this modern aesthetic, I’d be most happy. I’ve already identified a few. So without further ado…
A designer’s role
It’s Monday. It’s lunch time. It’s the Monday lunch blog… Do I need a catchier name?
Lately I’ve been thinking about where I want to be in my career in the near and distant future. There are so many things I would do aside from design if I had the time and training or expertise — mobilize transit users to demand better service, start a community garden project on a vacant lot, crusade publicly against plastic bags, that sort of thing. Fortunately, as a designer I have the opportunity to help other people pursue the causes I value. It’s not entirely selfless as I know I’d get some kind of satisfaction knowing I made a difference but it’s out of my inherent care for people and places that I want to make a change.
Does this mean I’m famous?
The Monday lunch blog is back and I have some exciting news this week!
Applied Arts’ current issue (September) includes the winners of the 2007 Applied Arts Student Awards. I just noticed it today and haven’t had a chance to peruse through the list, but if you do, keep an eye out for my name under “E”. My first of two grad projects, AfterTASTE is one of the winners in the interactive design category! They don’t provide a link directly to my project, but you can get there through my home page linked therein or just click here.
“See the design, advertising, photography, illustration and interactive stars of tomorrow.” That’s pretty rad. Does this mean I’m famous?
Also do check out the work by my friend and fellow ECI grad Anne-Marie Gar Wai Leong.
The image quality is a bit shocking but they’re not charging me for hosting my image!
I encourage current art and design students to apply, ESPECIALLY Emily Carr Institute students because we need more representation! The entry deadline is around February/March. Keep an eye out for the call for entries!
Heartbreak!
I have perhaps never been so disappointed in my life. Well, except that time A Perfect Circle cancelled their show here because Maynard was “sick.” Or that time I set the ol’ VCR wrong. Or when I travelled a long way only to have a friend or family member cancel.
Despite those disappointments, they didn’t seem to come with such heartbreak. An Event Apart* in Seattle is sold out. And I was just about to write in a cover letter how I wanted to attend so badly. I even realised it was motivation to get myself a great job ASAP.
Le sigh!
Well, next year I guess. In the meantime I’ll be searching for some books by Jeffrey Zeldman, Eric Meyer and Andy Budd. And maybe someone will hire me and fly me to Chicago for the event in August! Oh wait, I don’t have a passport. Books, it is.
* An Event Apart is a 2-day conference for web designers featuring six well-known speakers from the industry. No non-geeks allowed 😉
Emily Carr Institute grad website official launch!
Go here now! grad2007.eciad.ca
Over 200 students’ work from our 7 diverse programs are showcased on the website. Be sure to click the images for a larger view. Special thanks to all our volunteers, coordinators, and partner designers. Thanks also to Lokesh Dhakar for Lightbox 2 and Millstream for “Cross-fade Anything” (ver. 4.1), and to John Gruber (daringfireball.net) for Markdown and Smartypants MovableType plug-ins.
So it was a gruelling month, but tomorrow I graduate, and tonight I had the pleasure of seeing a piece of me on 4 gorgeous computer screens, and of watching people interact with it. My partner in crime design, Richard Tom, was absent but I’ll be sure to send him a photo.
So come to the opening tomorrow night, 7 – 11 pm. My work is in room 340, and 6 computers displaying the grad site are in the two buildings (4 in the South Building in the design area, shown above, and 2 in the North Building in the foyer).
See you there!
Graduating! Come to the show! Grad Show 2007!
My project AfterTASTE is exhibiting in the design part of the Undergraduate Exhibition at Emily Carr Institute! I’m also on the design team for the show’s website, which showcases about 240 students’ work, so I technically get two exhibits 😉 The website will be displayed at computer kiosks throughout the two buildings. The show runs for two weeks so I hope you can come check it out! Grad catalogues will also be available. Please pass on this info and enjoy!
